Preparation course for the Estonian Language A2-Level Examination

Course: 270 academic hours
Study period: 25. August 2026 – 25. May 2027

Target Group and Entry Requirements
The course is intended for adults who have completed an Estonian language course at A1 level and wish to acquire Estonian language skills at A2 level. The A1-level course may have been completed either at Keelevärav OÜ, another language school, or through independent study.
Placement is based on an internal A1-level Estonian language test and an interview.
Objective
To acquire Estonian language skills and competences at A2 level and prepare learners for the official A2-level state examination.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the learner will have acquired Estonian language proficiency at A2 level and will be able to complete typical tasks found in the official state examination.
By the end of the course, the learner:
– understands clearly and slowly pronounced phrases, frequently used words, and sentences directly related to areas of personal importance;
– can communicate in a simple manner and express themselves in general terms in everyday communication situations and within topics of personal interest;
– understands short and simple texts;
– can write very simple messages and personal letters.
Course participants will acquire vocabulary related to the following topics: health and healthcare, housing and real estate, catering and dining, transport and travel, education, leisure and entertainment, work and employment relations, everyday services, public institutions, and personal relationships.

Course Content
Speaking, Reading, Listening and Writing Topics

  1. Getting Acquainted

Introductions and self-introductions. Personal information. Family, relatives, and family tree. Marital status. Appearance and character. Alphabet, speech etiquette, pronunciation rules. Form-filling information. Question words.

  1. Daily Life, Home and Local Area

Home and surroundings, household items and appliances, household chores, pets, asking for information about an apartment or house, writing advertisements, housekeeping. Everyday living conditions.

  1. Culture, Nationalities and Languages

Description of one’s country of origin, language skills, native language, foreign languages, countries, capitals. Learning foreign languages. Maps and Estonian geography. Holidays, celebrations, songs. Traditional foods, clothing, customs. Business cards.

  1. Environment, Places, Weather and Nature

Cardinal directions, weather forecasts, clothing. Seasons. Birds, animals, and plants.

  1. Work and Employment Relations

Job advertisements. Application forms containing personal data. Job interviews – professions and occupations, describing the workplace, intentions, job duties, professional information. Workplace notices.

  1. Education

Basic information about schools and childcare institutions. Timetables, training courses, educational institutions, studies, preferences, factual information from e-school systems, notices from childcare institutions and school meetings.

  1. Catering and Dining

Table reservations, written advertisements of catering establishments, menus, choosing food, food labels and common elements of food composition, ordering food and drinks from a menu, payment preferences. Eating habits. Daily specials and recipes.

  1. Everyday Services and Commerce

Postal services, banking services, insurance, hairdressing and beauty services, shoe repair, dry cleaning, laundries, etc. Shops, shopping centres, communication and information services, etc. Opening hours, types of services and prices. Service descriptions and signs. Basic services and simple transactions. Shopping, prices, quality. Quantity, measurement, size.

  1. Transport and Travel

Public transport, including long-distance travel (airplane, ferry, train, bus), urban transport, private transport, freight transport and transport services, travel agencies, accommodation establishments. Departure and arrival times, purchasing tickets at stations and through the T-pilet website. Giving directions. Obtaining factual information.

  1. Health and Healthcare

Healthcare institutions. Appointment times, dates, complaints, prices and payment conditions for medical services, written information provided by healthcare institutions (signs, notices, etc.), making a doctor’s appointment, providing factual information to emergency services, purchasing medicines.

  1. Leisure Time and Hobbies

Cultural, entertainment, and sports institutions. Cultural, entertainment, and sporting events. Hobbies, interests, and entertainment. Official receptions and visits. Media, information searches, and online communication. Cultural interests. Celebrating birthdays. Tastes and habits.
Grammar
Cases. Personal pronouns. Affirmative and negative forms, conjugation in the present tense, simple past tense, and present perfect tense, ma-infinitive and da-infinitive. Indicative mood. Conditional mood. Imperative mood. Adverbs. Comparison of adjectives. Cardinal and ordinal numbers. Postpositions. Question words such as kas?, mis?, kes?, etc. Describing location: in the middle, on the right, on the left, above, below, in the background, in the foreground.
