Estonian Language Support for 1st Grade Students
By the end of 1st Grade, the student can:
Listening
Understands simple conversations and the content of short stories, announcements, and messages at an age-appropriate level, provided they are on a familiar topic, related to daily activities, and delivered slowly and clearly. Requires repetition and clear pronunciation.
Reading
Reads short, standard texts containing everyday vocabulary using the whole-word method; finds information within the text at an age-appropriate level and understands the meaning of simpler texts. The reading pace is slow.
Speaking
Can describe their immediate environment, daily activities, and people at an age-appropriate level. Uses basic vocabulary, simple everyday phrases, grammatical constructions, and sentence patterns. Is able to start and end a short conversation at an age-appropriate level but cannot lead or manage it.
Writing
Composes descriptions of their immediate environment and people within the limits of the vocabulary learned. Writes simple notes related to daily life activities (e.g., postcards, invitations) and drafts short messages. Can compose short texts based on a model, using the textbook glossary as an aid.
Grammar
Uses some simple structures at an age-appropriate level but frequently makes mistakes in core grammar (e.g., confusing tenses or making errors in subject-verb agreement). Knows cardinal numbers up to 100 and ordinal numbers up to 10 in the nominative case. Recognizes singular and plural word forms, affirmative and negative speech, and forms simple interrogative sentences (questions).

Introducing oneself; describing oneself, family members, peers, and friends.
2. HOME AND THE HOME ENVIRONMENT
The annual cycle (seasons), home, hometown/locality, local nature, household chores, family events.
3. ESTONIA
Major cities, state and national symbols, red-letter days of the folk calendar.
4. COUNTRIES AND THEIR CULTURE
Neighboring countries, capitals.
5. DAILY LIFE. LEARNING AND WORK
Health, school, school premises, school supplies, school subjects, the journey to school, numbers, geometric shapes, polite expressions, means of transport, colors, foodstuffs, items of clothing.
6. LEISURE TIME
Toys, favorite activities, game instructions/rules.
