Preparation Course for the Estonian Language B1-Level Examination
Target Group and Admission Requirements
This course is intended for both young people and adults who want to reach B1-level proficiency in Estonian and successfully pass the national proficiency examination. To join the course, learners should already have A2-level proficiency. Applicants´ language skills are assessed through an interview and a comprehensive diagnostic test, which can conveniently be taken on our school´s website. Candidates who achieve a score of 60% or higher are eligible to start the course.
Enrollment requires the completion of an application form, available either on the official website or at the Keelevärav OÜ training centre.
Objective
The primary objective of the course aims to enable learners to achieve B1-level linguistic competence and fluency, as well as to prepare them for the national B1-level proficiency examination. Furthermore, the course aims to enable learners to function independently in most everyday communicative situations in Estonia.
Language of Instruction
Instruction is provided in Russian or English.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the learner will have achieved B1-level proficiency in Estonian. By the end of the program, the learner:
- demonstrates the ability to complete standard tasks characteristic of the national proficiency examination;
- understands the main points and key details of regularly recurring topics in everyday life (work, school, and leisure);
- understands straightforward texts related to everyday life (family, hobbies, employment, travel, etc.);
- can request information, ask for clarification, express opinions, and make suggestions in practical situations;
- can produce simple, cohesive texts on familiar topics or areas of personal interest.
The learner will have mastered the vocabulary associated with the following domains: public life, education, employment, and personal life.

Themes for Speaking, Reading, Listening, and Writing
1. Interpersonal Relationships Introductions and personal data. Friends, neighbors, and family structures. Physical appearance and personality traits. Expressing emotions. Completing forms and questionnaires. Phonetics and pronunciation.
2. Consumer Services and Commerce Shops, shopping centers, and communication institutions. Postal and banking services, insurance, and beauty services (hairdressing, etc.). Technical services (cobblers, dry cleaning, laundry services, etc.). Describing situations, incidents, and events. Semi-formal correspondence. Properties and conditions of objects. Quantities and measurements.
3. Health and Healthcare Healthcare institutions. Making appointments, schedules, and medical complaints. Pricing and payment terms for medical services. Patient records and data. Written healthcare information (signage, notices, etc.). Registering for consultations and purchasing medication. Reasons for seeking medical attention. Home visits.

12. Culture and Languages Language acquisition and geography. Estonian culture and social domains. Cultural events and performers. Famous cultural figures, traditions, customs, folk songs, and proverbs. National holidays and significant anniversaries.
Grammar
Nouns: Declension in singular and plural; agreement with adjectives, numerals, and pronouns. Antonyms, synonyms, and compound words.
Numerals: Cardinal and ordinal numbers and their declension.
Pronouns: Primary forms and usage.
Conjunctions and Punctuation: Usage and syntax.
Verbs: Conjugation in present, simple past, present perfect, and past perfect tenses. Verb patterns and usage, imperative, and conditional moods. Infinitives, phrasal verbs, and the gerund form.
Prepositions and Postpositions: Usage of invariant words.
Adverbs: Degrees of comparison.
Syntax: Word order and interrogative structures (question words).
