Estonian Course for Beginners 0-A1
Target Group and Entry Requirements
Adults who have not previously studied Estonian. The prerequisite for starting the course is registration through the Keelevärav website.
Objective
To achieve Estonian language proficiency at level A1.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the learner:
– can communicate in a simple way, ask simple questions, and answer them;
– can introduce themselves and others, greet people, and say goodbye politely;
– can understand familiar names, words, and simple sentences on signs, posters, and in catalogues;
– can talk independently about themselves, their place of residence, and describe people they know;
– can write short and simple messages and complete forms with personal information.
Course Content
Speaking, Reading, Listening and Writing Topics
- Getting Acquainted: introductions, polite expressions, farewells, speech etiquette, languages.
- Family and Relatives: marital status, age, appearance, family roles, daily activities.
- Meetings: institutions in the city, telling the time, telephone conversations, etiquette.
- Home and Residence: household items, numbers, address, advertisements, places.
- Work and Leisure: day, week, month. Free time. Interests and hobbies. Pets.
- In the City: places in the city and countryside. Buying tickets, asking for information. Signs. Giving directions. Ordering a taxi.
- At the Shop and Market: food products, recipes. Polite requests and ordering.
- At a Café: food and drinks. Polite requests and ordering.
- Weather and Cardinal Directions: precipitation, seasons, adjectives.
